This short, 87 page book is an easy-to-read unpacking and explanation of 1 Timothy 2:9-15. It is like a mini commentary in the way that it digs into the passage, yet still flows like an easy reading book. In 4 short chapters John MacArthur explains the Biblical role of women as we find in 1 Timothy.
I personally appreciated the simplicity of this book - it's a "get in and get out" kind of read. In two hours I was able to read the entire book and take notes while really being impacted by it's message. While there are no lists of things to do or steps to take for change, learning the depth of what this passage means is enough to cultivate a desire for growth and/or change if you truly want to apply Scripture to your life. At the end of each chapter there is a short "Review" section that asks questions on what you read and helps you retain more and also would make a great discussion guide for a book club or Bible study.
I highly recommend this book to any woman or teen girl and think that it is a great individual read or perfect for discipleship or Bible study settings. It is a fabulous de-funking of false beliefs on women being second class in the Bible and a wonderful re-building of the high call God has placed on a woman's life.
So many times I am find myself wondering how I managed without a cell phone...or how I would contact people without Facebook...or how inconvenient it would be without wifi in our home...and sometimes I even wonder how I learned without twitter. And this is exactly what - and so much more! - Tim Cahllies deals with in this book: The Next Story.
I "read" the audio version of this book and because it was not a book that I wanted to read but rather knew I should read. The audio format was best for me and was easy to listen to.
This is a book that will challenge you, make you think, and give you lots to continue to think about. However, while being deep and probing, I still felt that it was easy to understand and digest the message.
Tim is both gifted and knowledgeable as a communicator on the subject of technology and he brings to the table some very thought-provoking ideas and ways of determining the place for technology in the life of a Christian. I appreciate that, in my opinion, he is balanced - not willing to throw out technology but not glossing over it either - and looks at things from a realistic, and most importantly, Biblical view point. Now I don't mean that I agree with everything he said...er' I mean wrote but I definitely walked away understanding technology better and the desire to make it serve me, not I serve it. This book was both personally and "parentally" beneficial.
I would highly recommend anyone - adult or teen - read this book (or listen to it!) as it will help you figure out the place for technology in your life.
BOOK OVERVIEW:
Even the least technical among us are being pressed from all sides by advances in digital technology. We rely upon computers, cell phones, and the Internet for communication, commerce, and entertainment. Yet even though we live in this ‘instant message’ culture, many of us feel disconnected, and we question if all this technology is really good for our souls. In a manner that attempts to be accessible, thoughtful, and biblical, I address questions such as:
How has life—and faith—changed now that everyone is available all the time through mobile phones? How does our constant connection to these digital devices affect our families and our church communities? What does it mean that almost two billion humans are connected by the Internet … with hundreds of millions more coming online each year?
Providing the reader with a framework they can apply to any technology, I explain how and why our society has become reliant on digital technology, what it means for our lives, and how it impacts the Christian faith.
So it’s a book not just for the young and digital, but for all of us.
The intriguing title and cover are the first things to draw you into an intense, yet exhilarating probe of our freedom in Christ in the so-called gray areas of life. Brent has done a fabulous job at writing a book that sticks to the point, isn't full of big words and hard to grasp ideas, and stays true to the Word of God. In the first few chapters He presents the ground work of our freedom in Christ and in the last chapters he provides examples and "case studies" of what it all looks like fleshed out. In chapter five He presents sixteen questions as tools to aid you in establishing your freedom in Christ in gray areas.
Overall I really liked and appreciated this book. It's a comprehensive, yet simple and straight-forward book that the average person can both understand and enjoy. I was reading it in review before our teens in youth group begin to read it as part of this year's selected reading and while I think it's a great book, I do think it's possibly a little on the older side for some teens. However, that said, I still encourage them to at least try to read it as it does get easier as you go along. Brent has taken a hard issue and made it manageable - like eating an elephant one bite at a time! - and so I highly recommend teens and adults read this book and that parents work through it with their teenagers for maximum impact. It doesn't hold "all the answers" but it does give you food for thought that will help you think through gray issues using Scripture as your guide.
I think it was the title...but for whatever reason this is a book I had seen many times and just never bought for myself to read. But recently when a dear man of God recommended this to our church leadership I immediately found it on PaperBackSwap and began to read it.
WOW!
This book is not about the how-to's of prayer like so many other books are, but about the why we pray and the power of prayer. And for those of you in my circle, it's not "out there" either. While there are a few things I can't say I agree with, there is a whole lot more that I heartily say "Amen!" to and long to see happen in the local churches around here.
It's hard to pull apart this book to determine my favorite part...but if forced to make a choices I would say it was the chapter titled "The Lure of Novelty" where Cymbala speaks frankly on the the power of prayer against casting out and binding. I really appreciated his very balanced approach to this issue and his loving way of stating the truth.
I highly recommend this book for those who want to understand prayer more and be challenged to pray more. I don't know how anyone could not be excited after reading this book filled with a multitude of testimonies from Cymbala and his congregation. Teens and adults of all ages need to read this book and practice it's passion!
BOOK OVERVIEW:
Pastor Jim Cymbala shares the lessons he learned when the Spirit ignited his heart and began to move through his people. This book is for anyone seeking to live at the center of God’s purposes, through experiencing the power of his Spirit. This softcover edition includes a study guide.
Worldliness is not just another book about the does and dont's of the Christian life. Rather this book addresses the heart behind the things we do and don't do as children of God. It goes beyond how we should dress and what movies we should not watch to dig in to why we dress the way we do and why we shouldn't watch a certain movie.
I enjoyed this book in the audio format for it's great quality. It was smooth and clear and the narration was enjoyable to listen to. Using the audio format to read this book is a fabulous choice and the only downside I found was with the discussion questions - it would have been easier if I could read them in print versus just hearing them.
Mahaney and the other men do a great job of keeping each chapter short and to the point while sharing a deep and balanced view of the topic at hand. I walked away feeling so convicted on all issues, especially ones I would have said I had "mastered". However, with this heart probing approach you are sure to walk away challenged and once again amazed by God's grace. This book takes the daily stuff right back to the cross.
BOOK OVERVIEW:
This resource uncovers the presence of worldliness and helps believers learn to relate to the world while resisting its influence in their lives.
People today are saturated in technology and prosperity. They are bombarded with endless luxuries: clothes to wear, cars to buy, vacations to take, entertainment to enjoy. Yet this world, which offers so many pleasures, is actively opposed to God and the truth of His Word. How, then, is the believer to relate to the world in which he or she lives?
Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World uncovers the presence of worldliness-the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes, and the boasting of what he has or does. Worldliness then reveals how Christians are to engage a fallen world and boldly preach the gospel, yet not be conformed and ultimately seduced by the system of this world.
As readers learn to identify the presence of worldliness in the areas of media, modesty, music, and material possessions, they can begin to resist its influence in their lives and instead pursue eternal godliness.

I really appreciate this book and how it explains and exposes recent movements and fades within the church based on the standard of the Bible. Each chapter is a short, yet thorough, explanation of a particular topic or trend and each one is written by a different man.
I personally enjoyed this book because I don't have the time nor attention span to read an entire book about each of the topics enclosed between it's cover. However, each of the issues it addresses are ones that I need to be informed about even in an overview format. Then men who have written this book present with a balanced and Biblical view and in ways that make it easy to read and understand.
Fools Gold? is a perfect book for anyone to read and a great book to read when you only have 10 minute windows of time. While this is several years old now, it's still very relevant to today's culture.
BOOK OVERVIEW:
God’s Word is clear that not everything that glitters is gold. In this uncompromising book, John MacArthur and the contributors lay a foundation for biblical discernment to assess several current Christian trends.
I requested to review this book because after reading other books by Susie I have come to appreciate and respect her writing. So while I didn't really know what the book was about until I began reading it, I walked away overwhelmed once again by God's amazing love and grace in our lives.
Embracing Your Freedom walks you down a path of getting a better understanding for God's heart for justice and how we can experience His gift of freedom no matter what our circumstances are. I really liked how this book is not just another social justice book - not like that is a bad thing - but it is a book that takes you much deeper than just physical freedom around the world to spiritual freedom in every woman's life - especially the reader. This book will soften your heart toward the plight of many who suffer and encourage you to make the most of the freedom you do have. It goes beyond motivating you to challenging you personally. When a book can take a big picture and connect it to your small part of that picture it means the author has done his/her job. In this case, Susie had done a phenomenal job of writing this book!
BOOK OVERVIEW:
While our culture places great emphasis on comfort, security, control, and success, there are deeper rewards for those who take hold of God's promises and who thus reach out in the Name of Christ. Adventure, faith, miracles, and a deep knowledge of Jesus Christ: this is what Susie calls her readers to realize.
Author/speaker Susie Larson makes her message accessible and doable. Her stories, scriptural devotionals, and study questions set the stage for a first-hand experience of God's heart for personal freedom, for the plight of the suffering, and for a conviction to get involved with His work among those in need. While the book's primary focus is on the reader's journey into freedom, it clearly conveys our shared responsibility to "seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, [and] plead for the widow" (Isaiah 1:17, NRSV). This is God's expectation for those who truly know Him.
Each chapter includes devotional insights, justice quotes, anecdotes, prayer guidance, and study/reflective questions. Here is a link to another review of this book.

This book won't make you feel comfortable. It won't give you warm and fuzzy feelings. In fact, it actually might make you down right mad at times.
And that, my friend, is exactly why you GOTTA HAVE IT!
Gregory L. Jantz has written this book that will make you stop and think about all that you have, or don't have, in life. Not only will he challenge your thinking and what you believe, but if you commit to working through each chapter, you will also sift through applying it to your daily life.
At the very least this book will make you stop and think about the excess in your life that you may not even realize is there. The only negative I see in this book is that I don't think it points us to the cross as much as it could. If you choose to read this book I would highly suggest following it up with either The Cross Centered Life or Comforts From The Cross.
BOOK OVERVIEW:
Gotta Have It! is every grown-up's guide for taming the inner two-year-old.
Too many people spend so much time trying to get what they want that they have no energy left to get what they need. Dr. Gregg Jantz calls this phenomenon excessity-when excess becomes a "necessity." Excessities-whether they are activities, behaviors, or objects-promise protection in a difficult world. Yet they never satisfy.
In Gotta Have It!, readers are invited to discover the truth about themselves that is hiding behind their secret desires. With real-life stories and guided sections for self-reflection, Gotta Have It will help readers see life as never before-and delight in the way God longs to fulfill true needs.
Are you struggling to understand the mind of someone dealing with anorexia? Maybe it's your friend or possibly a family member.
Or maybe it's your own mind and body that has become a battleground for this possibly fatal war.
Whatever your reason for wanting to read Hollow, you will be captured by this poignant testimony and ongoing journey of Jena Morrow.
I appreciated the vulnerability and raw honesty with which Jena shares. The story she unfolds in this book helped me for the first time to gain even a fraction of understanding of why someone can and does turn to the eating disorder of anorexia. Jena does not try to make it appealing or glossy, but rather tells it as it was - to the best of her memory and ability. If you don't understand anorexia you will finish this book with a better grasp of what goes on in one's mind to lead them into such depths. Or if you know the struggle from first-hand experience, I think you will be encouraged by the life of someone who rose from the depths back to living a functioning life battling the ongoing temptations.
While this is a book that would not have grabbed me from the bookstore shelf to read - a classic case of don't judge a book by it's cover - I am thankful for reading this unpolished tale as Jena calls it. Even though I have not struggled with anorexia I walked away understanding how my mind believes other lies about my body and how Christ - and Christ alone - can set me free of those.
I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand anorexia better or needing the encouragement of someone else who has fought this battle.
BOOK OVERVIEW:
Twenty nine years, 7 months, 14 days and the battle still rages…
Jena Morrow has an eating disorder. It can kill her. Jena Morrow has a Savior. He came to give her abundant life.
This is not a polished tale of victory but an honest, true story of fragility. Hollow recounts Jena’s daily struggle with anorexia and the God who is able and willing to reach down into the dirt. A central theme of Hollow is the surrender of control to Jesus Christ. His Word is interwoven throughout the story as rebuttals to the lies that besiege those engaged in any addiction.
In addition to her point of view, Jena includes those of her friends, family, and former therapists providing an undercurrent of hope.
Written in an easy conversational voice, Hollow will resonate with those in the midst of a struggle and those who stand beside them.
Jackie Johnson gets right to the heart of the matter with this in-depth, yet incredibly simple and practical book on dealing with the emotions of a break-up from a woman's perspective. When Love Ends walks readers through four stages of handling a break-up and recovering from the loss of this close relationship. As Jackie takes you through Twilight, Night, Dawn, and Day you will come to a better understanding of how you can heal from the hurt and grow closer to God through the entire situation.
While the main focus of this book is on break-ups between a dating couple and is geared toward the single woman, I think any woman can read this book and benefit from the biblical truth of how to deal with difficult relationships. My personal favorite was chapter 6 on the topic of forgiveness and I appreciated Jackie's gentle and loving approach in this chapter and through out the entire book.
Each chapter of this book is helpful, insightful, truthful, encouraging and full of God's Word. Jackie's mix of personal stories, sharing of Scripture, and practical application along with thought-provoking questions make this a great book that you will read and refer to again and again.
I highly recommend this book to any single woman college-age and older as well as any woman looking for a good book addressing tough aspects of relationships. When Love Ends will help you heal from past break-ups or prepare you for when they do happen.
BOOK OVERVIEW:
Losing a hope-filled dating relationship is a stressful and painful event. And when it seems to occur again, again, and again, is ice cream the only refuge for a Christian single?
As one who has walked this road before, author Jackie M. Johnson says an emphatic "no!"
While most books for singles tell readers how to get the next guy, When Love Ends and the Ice Cream Carton is Empty encourages a healthy healing process. Practical and biblically based, each chapter guides the reader through a metaphorical day of restoration. Twilight recognizes and deals with endings, night validates and grieves the loss, dawn awakens hope, and day is the new beginning based on the solid assurance of Christ. When Love Ends will help heal your heart -- and help change your life.
Chapters conclude with discussions questions for individual or group study, helpful Bible verses, and a prayer.

This is the raw, honest, and vulnerable sharing from Joni's heart and from the Word of God about suffering. It's a powerful look at how God is a loving God and has plans for us to bring glory to Him and grow in our relationship with Him.
I enjoyed Joni's amazing perspective, steady faithfulness, and open honesty. She addresses the issue of Healing Services in a kind, yet biblically sound way. After reading this book you will have a better appreciation for your life as it is and for all that God is doing in your life.
This audio book is read by Joni and hearing her voice just brings this book to life - planting it's truth deep inside your heart. If you are going through a hard time this book will encourage you. Or if you are facing an easy time right now, this book will help you prepare for when life isn't always the way you want it.
BOOK OVERVIEW:
In this eloquent account of her current struggle with physical pain, Joni Eareckson Tada offers her perspective on divine healing, God’s purposes, and what it means to live with joy. Over four decades ago, a diving accident left Joni a quadriplegic. Today, she faces a new battle: unrelenting pain.
The ongoing urgency of this season in her life has caused Joni to return to foundational questions about suffering and God’s will. A Place of Healing is not an ivory tower treatise on suffering. Its an intimate look into the life of a mature woman of God.
Whether readers are enduring physical pain, financial loss, or relational grief, Joni invites them to process their suffering with her. Together, they will navigate the distance between God’s magnificent yes and heartbreaking no and find new hope for thriving in between.

Sometimes you read a book and go away really challenged.
Then other times you walk away not remembering what you just read.
And then still there are times when you can't walk away because what you read has weakened your body with such conviction from the Holy Spirit.
This book is one of those times.
Everything else about the day seems to slip away and all that plays in my mind are snippets from listening to the audio version of this book. Not only was the quality and narration of this book great, but the message it's self made everything else pale in comparison.
I realized just how caught up I am in the American Dream rather than being sold out for the Lord God with a burning, all consuming passion. This book is a must-read for anyone - teen and up. It will bring the reality of life back to where it needs to be in perspective of the Gospel.
While this would be a great book to read, I highly recommend the audio version so that you can easily "read" the book over several times in order to let the message sink deep inside your heart and mind.
BOOK OVERVIEW:
Take a transforming journey in authentic discipleship. As the pastor of a large and wealthy congregation, David Platt began to see a discrepancy between the reality of his Church and the way Jesus said His followers lived. In Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream, Platt examines how American Christianity has manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences and challenges readers to rediscover the path

Radical Womanhood could radically change your thinking on what it means to be a woman!
Carolyn McCulley has written an eloquent and comprehensive, yet straight-forward and simply-stated book on how the feminist movement has altered womanhood and the role that women have in our culture today. This book is both informative as well as challenging. I greatly enjoyed how Carolyn would share the background of the feminist movement and how it has impacted a specific aspect of womanhood before addressing the Biblical side of that issue. This book is not another "Bible thumping message", but rather a probing look into how the feminist movement disconnected from the radical design of God for women.
Carolyn's approach is gentle, knowledgeable, sensitive, respectful, and simple. I appreciated that she is not another "old woman" passing on tradition, but rather a highly studied student of this topic from both sides of the issue. She does not merely write from a stereotypical conservative view point, but one based solidly on Scripture.
Radical Womanhood is 8 chapters long and addresses a thorough overview of the feminist movement, what our problem really is, what the rolls of both men and woman are, how the movement has impacted life across the spectrum, and much more. This book is incredibly empowering and helps you understand the background to various beliefs about the process and history of feminism. Each chapter is followed by a short personal story of a woman that illustrates the message talked about in the previous pages. They bring a sense of community to this book as you read about the struggles and victories of other woman grappling with the same things you may be wrestling through. You gain an emotional and real-life view of Biblical principles being lived out in the real world.
The were many challenges and encouragements that I walked away with, but one thing that seemed to stand out above all was when Carolyn shared that there is a difference between fighting for woman's rights - restoring their God-given rights - and setting women above both men and God. This is not your "be-a-doormat-and-serve-your-husband-without-question" book, this is a call to be Radical Women!
BOOK OVERVIEW:
Biblical womanhood is not for the weak. In an age that seeks to obliterate God and His authority, modeling biblical womanhood involves spiritual warfare. Radical Womanhood seeks to equip new believers and long-time Christians alike, exposing the anti-God agenda of the three waves of feminism to date and presenting the pro-woman truth of the Scriptures. Illustrated with numerous personal testimonies, this book will dig deep into the Word and show how it can be lived out today. The foundation and core message of Radical Womanhood is consistent with the traditional complementarian teaching on biblical womanhood. However, the target audience, tone, and style are radically different. Most books on this subject take a heavily didactic tone that assumes an awareness of Christian lingo and a high degree of spiritual maturity. Radical Womanhood has the narrative approach appreciated by postmodern readers, but still incorporates solid, biblically-based teaching for personal application and growth.

This book gets awarded with the To Read, Or Not To Read badge of distinction - Best Of The Best Badge! - for the fact that because it is so good, it has been added to Mandy’s bookshelf!
Girls Gone Wise is the captivating comparison of a wise girl who has Christ at the center of her heart versus the wild girl of Proverbs 7. This easy-to-read, yet intensely thought-provoking book will have you mulling over life changing Biblical truth as you hold your life up to the light of Scripture.
Mary Kassian addresses the lives of women in the areas of their heart, boundaries, habits, attitudes, body language, speech, appearance, approach, and more. While this book appears to be for younger women, it is incredibly applicable for a woman of any age - 15 to 115. Each chapter deals with a specific area as listed above and clearly compares the worlds view with the plans that God has for His daughters.
I love how this book brings such deep meaning to a passage and opens it up in a whole new way. I appreciated Mary's direct approach with her writing and her commitment to saying the hard things that I am sure will hit home with every woman who reads this book. This should be the text book for all women on being a godly female in a world where we are constantly bombarded with the lies of the flesh.
This would make a perfect gift for any woman seeking to be a woman who glorifies God, but especially to a young woman just graduating high school as she takes the next step to being on her own.
Direct, fresh, real, and straight-shooting are a few of the words I would use to sum up this excellent resource for pursuing wisdom in a world gone wild.

Life, In Spite of Me is the story - the testimony! - of Kristen Anderson and God's amazing hand in her life despite her attempted suicide.
I read this book in two hours and hungrily turned each page as I cried in awe of God's amazing grace. Kristen wrote honestly with tenderness that not only shares her story, but touches you in whatever place you are in right now. I greatly appreciated the openness and the vulnerability with which Kristen shared her story.
The book was well written and presented the hard truth in a kind manner. Kristen and Tricia created a book that draws attention and then focuses it onto the Lord. The story along with the "personal letters" at the end of each chapter make this an amazingly encouraging read and I would highly suggest it to anyone struggling with their life.
No matter if your life is hard or easy or somewhere in between right now, this book is for YOU. As the back cover says: "Find Hope. Right Here. Right now."
I picked up this book to read for review knowing that it would be good, but completely unaware of just how good it would be. James unpacks 4 scripture passages and what they each mean to us when we face various trials - big or small. Not only does this book open up new thoughts and understanding on timeless passages, but it also gives practical ways of applying what you are learning and ideas for processing and dealing with the trials you are or will face.
When Life Is Hard is real and despite the hard subject, this book is refreshing, uplifting, and incredibly challenging in an invigorating way. It is deep stuff explained in simple terms. It is biblical truth in a format that is easy to follow and read. You will be encouraged by this book no matter what you reading level or skills are. James MacDonald ministers to you from personal experience and a relationship with Jesus Christ. This messages hits home no matter where home may be. It is a must-read and must-own for any Christian, but especially for anyone in full-time ministry. This book is one of the Best Of The Best!

The title really states what the book is all about. It's the emotional story of two families caught in the effect of human error.
This story held some twists and turns that would make one think it had to be fiction. However, this is a true story despite the hurt and pain caused. I appreciated the honesty with which Shannon shared their journey to overcome something bad in order to enjoy the blessing. It is such an amazing encouragement to read of the sacrifice of one family for another so that life could be celebrated.
In this audio version I greatly enjoyed the narrator and the high quality reading. It was easy to listen to and engaging.
While I don't necessarily agree with the views and beliefs presented in this book about IFV, it was still a fascinating biography and testimony to the sanctity of life. It's a book you won't want to put down/turn off until you've read the last page or heard the last track.

oices of the True Woman Movement is an amazing compilation of messages given by a handful of wonderful speakers on what it means to be a woman in light of scripture. While this is in audio book format - so you are not hearing the voice of the actual speaker - the narration is still high quality and delivers the messages with authentic quality.
I was both refreshed and challenged by the content of this book. It explained biblical truth and a loving way that encourages and convicts, too. The personal illustrations and examples shared in this 5 CDs were uplifting and helpful. I highly recommend this book - in print or audio format - for any woman seeking to know and grow in their understanding of what the Bible says about being a woman.
This audio version was wonderful to listen to while doing household chores or exercising and I think it makes it easier to digest, too!

For those who followed Angie Smith and the story of Audrey unfold on her blog this book feels like a chat with Angie over a nice warm drink. And for those who are new to the Smith's dance with joy and grief you will quickly fall in love with this family and their testimony.
Angie puts into words the thoughts and emotions of a mother who clings to hope while grieving, lives life fully while preparing for the worst, and who begs God for a miracle all the while praising Him no matter what. I Will Carry You is the story of the life of Audrey and the huge impact this small little girl had on her family and on the world. It will leave you counting your blessings, living with abandon, and celebrating life - no matter how long or how short.
I was touched by Angie's honest and vulnerability with her readers and her simple, yet profound, explanations of what her dance was and continues to be like. I have been touched by the music of Selah for years and since 2008 even more so with the music being backed up by authentic lives. Though their road has not been easy, they have blessed many lives through their tears and their joy in the time of great grief.
Whether you are a Mom or not, this book will have you crying and rejoicing all at the same time. Both Angie's writing and Todd's chapter from a man's perspective will be an encouragement in your life.
I must confess that I am not a big advocate of "going green" and I accepted this review opportunity more out of curiosity than a desire to learn more. However, while I can't say I agree with everything the author said, I can say hat Anna Clark definitely challenged my thinking and lifestyle.
The overarching principle of this book is about our stewardship for the sake of our testimony rather than for the cause of going green. I appreciated Clark's approach to the issues of going green in the first half of the book without preaching or condemning those who don't embrace the cause. The rest of the book is an encouraging practical guide on how to go green at any level in order to make your life simpler and your wallet fuller. While presenting a balanced view of going green this book takes you back the roots of living a moderate life - the good life.
