What Makes You Unique by C.J. Carleton

What Makes You Unique: Discover the Truth or Believe the Lieimage What Makes You Unique: Discover the Truth or Believe the Lie by C.J. Carleton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

This Bible study book is like a wonderful chat with a dear friend. C.J. makes teen girls who work their way through this book feel like they are her best friend as they dig into God's Word and learn more about the One who IS their best friend.

I really appreciated how this was more than just a "fill-in-the-blank" study guide. C.J. walks teen girls through some things in each chapter and then leaves them with a few probing questions and thoughts along with a passage to dig into. It's just the right amount of help with the right amount of challenge for a teen girl!

If you have a daughter, granddaughter, or know a girl between 13 and 18 I would recommend you consider this book as your next gift for her!

BOOK OVERVIEW:

Why am I here? What is God’s plan for my life? Why did God make me the way I am? These are questions that everyone asks at some point in life, but especially teenagers. The teen years are a roller coaster---friends, boys, peer pressure, parents---where do you turn?
This book is written especially for teen girls who are searching for answers about life: girls who struggle with the desire to be themselves and the fear of being different. In particular, it is for Christian girls who want to know how to be unique in a world that praises conformity and who want to be Christ-like in a culture that is quick to label Christian teens as self-centered snobs or geeks.

Join Cj Carleton for a heart-to-heart talk about what it means to be a young Christian woman in today’s world. She draws from Scripture, her personal experiences growing up, and her years of working with teen girls just like you to help you build a firm foundation for your life in the truth of Christ and the Word of God. Let her challenge you through journaling and self-discovery. Get ready to learn about yourself and fulfill God’s purpose for His unique creation---you!

Without A Word by Jill Kelly

Without a Wordimage Without a Word by Jill Kelly
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

I grew up in NY and the Buffalo Bills were "my" team. I even went to got my Jim Kelly trading card autographed one time when I was about 12! So it was with great interest that I listened to this audio book.

First of all I really enjoyed the fact that Jill Kelly read her own book. The vocal expression was wonderful and it was easier to listen to knowing that how she said what she said, was how she meant it. I also enjoyed hearing the voices of Jim, Erin, and Cameron as well.

Jill - and the whole family, really - were so open and vulnerable in this book and their story is amazing! It's a testament to God's amazing love and goodness. I was touched by their honesty, inspired by their passion, and encouraged by their journey to the Savior.

If you want to more about the Kelly family or just simple want a good biography to listen to, this is a perfect one to select.

BOOK OVERVIEW:

“Your son has been diagnosed with a fatal genetic disease called Krabbe Leukodystrophy. There is no treatment and no cure. I will do everything I can to help your son. But the disease has already progressed so fast that I don’t think he will live to see his second birthday.” With these words, pro football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly and his wife, Jill, were catapulted from a seemingly fairy-tale life of celebrity into a world of private struggle and medical uncertainty. What the public didn’t know, however, was that behind the scenes lurked more than a family’s pain at the dire prognosis of their only son. Hunter’s illness exposed the troubled depths of a marriage that had long been shadowed by uncertainties of its own. For eight years the future was unwritten, with Hunter defying all medical odds and his parents pursuing every means to save his life. Meanwhile, Jim and Jill’s marriage continued to fail yet was held together only by their love for their kids and their determined hope for Hunter. Though Hunter’s illness prevented him from ever speaking a word, his will and unconditional love spoke volumes to his family and all who knew him. And in time, the light of Hunter’s silent, all-too-brief life shone into the darkened corners of Jim and Jill’s lives, leading them to authentic faith, a restored relationship, and the establishment of a foundation that is reaching other families with terminally ill children around the world. Without a Word transparently shares it all: The heartbreaking moments . . . and those Jill would love to relive. Moments that add up to a time filled with unimaginable pain . . . and indescribable joy. Moments that silently transformed the hearts of every member of her family . . . and changed their lives forever. Moments that may even change your heart and life, too.

Who Is God? by Kathleen Ruckman

Who Is God?image Who Is God? by Kathleen Ruckman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

I love, love, love this sweet children's book that mixes adorable farm life with theology at an age appropriate level for young minds and hearts. Kathleen Ruckman has written a beautiful story that teaches Biblical truth while it entertains with simple delight. The main characters - Grandpa, Adam, and Annie - are easy to relate to and interact with one another in such a loving way that provides a wonderful example even from within the pages of a colorful storybook. I greatly appreciate how it teaches about God's love for us in practical, every-day terms and explains who God is so clearly for young children. This book is a must-have for any child's book shelf!

BOOK OVERVIEW

In Kathleen Ruckman’s delightful book for kids ages 5-8, colorful illustrations from Greg Hardin animate Annie and Adam’s adventures on their grandpa’s farm and the lessons they learn about God. Every starry sky, barnyard animal, and fishing trip leads to a conversation and an opportunity for young ones to discover God as Creator, Provider, and loving Father.

This delightful story explores the wisdom of the Bible, the love of Jesus, and the joy of being a child of God. A handy scripture reference is included to help parents and teachers in their conversations about God with special little ones in their lives.

Adventures of Rusty & Ginger Fox by Tim Ostermeyer

Adventures of Rusty & Ginger Foximage Adventures of Rusty & Ginger Fox by Tim Ostermeyer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

A cute tale - literally! - and wonderful photography collide in this unique book about two young foxes. It's fun to read and the photos are a delight. My 5-year-old daughter enjoyed both the story, photographs, and especially all the fun facts about the specific animals seen in this story. I highly recommend it for the fun learning it provides. The only downfall is that the end is so strange in comparison to the first half of the book and seems almost out of place in the book. However, despite the strange finish it is still an adorable children's book.

BOOK OVERVIEW:

Join Rusty and Ginger as they travel through the woods. Author Tim Ostermeyer’s beautiful wildlife photography provides a fox’s-eye view of the forest. With a charming story to guide the way, and a fact page of wildlife information for every animal introduced in the book, readers can explore nature alongside Rusty and Ginger.

Lydia’s Charm by Wanda Brunstetter

Lydia's Charmimage Lydia's Charm by Wanda Brunstetter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

Some say Amish Fiction books all blend together - but I say this one stands apart! I loved listening to this wonderfully read audio version of Wanda Brunstetter's Lydia's Charm.

The story overall was a great mix of "classic love story" with unexpected twists. Some of these twists were wonderful surprises and others were so shocking that I was in tears as I listened. I felt connected to all the characters in one way or another and even fell in love with the "unlovable" ones.

Not only was the story deep and real - beyond a feel-good romance - but it also dealt with such probing topics such as grief and prejudice. It was a longer book but with short, easy-reading (or easy-listening) chapters that kept you on the edge of your seat in anticipation of what was next.

I would highly recommend this book in print form or audio version. The audio version was smooth to listen to and I enjoyed hearing the dutch words rather then attempting to read them myself! If you are looking for a heart-warming novel that will also challenge your soul while making you both cry and laugh - Lydia's Charm is the perfect book!

BOOK OVERVIEW:

Lydia King is suddenly a widow and moves her son and herself to Charm, Ohio, to be close to her mother and help with her grandfather. But is her heart ready for romance when gifts begin appearing on her porch from a mysterious source? Menno Troyer, a furniture store owner, is also recently widowed and the father of four energetic boys. He has come to realize that, though he doesn’t think he’s ready to love again, his sons need a mother. Levi Stutzman, another newcomer to the area, is the only one in his family not handicapped by dwarfism, and he has dedicated his life to caring for them. Though determined never to marry, he is always willing to be of help to others. Will the anonymous gifts left for Lydia bring her hope for a new life? And when tragedy befalls her yet again, will the mysterious gift giver
be there to support her?

It’s No Secret by Rachel Olsen

It's No Secret: Revealing Divine Truths Every Woman Should Knowimage It's No Secret: Revealing Divine Truths Every Woman Should Know by Rachel Olsen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

The cover is the first thing that caught my attention with this book. The steamy hot drinks and cozy scene made me want to jump in and settle down with this book in hand! But the cover is only the start.

Rachel Olsen warmed my heart with her casual we-are-best-friends style of writing. She dug into deep Biblical truth in such a relaxed feel that it was not work to read, but relaxing and refreshing. The "secrets" she shares are just the bling I needed to add sparkle to my day and my walk with Christ. You will enjoy this fun and faith filled book from the first page to the last. It's just as nice as going to Starbucks for a chat with your girlfriends!

BOOK OVERVIEW:

Done with feeling exhausted—or worse, bored? Ready to trade your issues and hang-ups for greater intimacy and fulfillment? Then it’s time you did some digging for biblical “bling” and discovered the shining secrets to life in God’s kingdom. Rachel’s writing is lighthearted and fun, but she’s serious about helping you uncover biblical secrets that can make your life shine. This book will help you:

o Overcome the comparisons and competitive urges that leave you lonely

o Accept help from others

o Discover God’s surprising source of spiritual beauty and strength

o Embrace your need for rest

o Find adventure as you yield wholeheartedly to God

o Dig into the Bible for yourself and understand what you find there

A Warrior Prince for God by Kelly Chapman

A Warrior Prince for Godimage A Warrior Prince for God by Kelly Chapman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

This book is recommended for ages 3 to 8 but there was no way my 3-year-old was going to sit through the entire reading of this book. While it has great pictures that are bright and fun, the storyline is just a little too long for the younger ages. However, for older boys - 5 to 7 - this might be the perfect book. It's baseball, warriors, knights and horses, and all about being a warrior for Christ.

A Warrior Prince For God takes the rough and tumble and gives it a purpose and a place in a little boy's life. And what boy won't like the dog named "Burpie"?! This story helps boys understand their purpose in life and how they can be strong warriors for the Lord.

BOOK OVERVIEW:

“Once upon a real time there lived a boy named Luke. He dreamed of being a mighty warrior who was brave and courageous. But there was just one problem. He was afraid…”

In a lively story about baseball, camping, and facing your fears, author Kelly Chapman helps readers see that, no matter what they are afraid of, they can be strong in the Lord and in God’s mighty power. A Warrior Prince for God is all about finding out that a warrior prince is a Christian who lives a life worthy of his calling and enters into battles only when he is called, and then relying on God’s strength and not his own.

For ages 3 to 8 years

Princess with a Purpose by Kelly Chapman

Princess with a Purposeimage Princess with a Purpose by Kelly Chapman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

It is pink with sparkly poke-a-dots and that alone will get any girl's attention! But as you turn the pages it captures the heart of any little girl as it tells them how they CAN be a princess.

I read this story to my 5 and 7 year old daughters who loved the expressive pictures and the allure of learning how to be a princess. The story line was cute and easy for them to understand. They enjoyed the pictures and descriptions of all the "princess things" and I enjoyed how it gave the message that being a princess is all about being a child of God.

This book is targeted at girls ages 3 to 8. However, the pictures are great for the younger ages and the actual story line (wording) is more for the older end of that age range. I would say it's best for 5 and 6 year-olds and any siblings that fall in and around that age group. Also, the main character lives with her Grandma and has no parents in her life and so this book lends it's self to being even better when used with girls in that type of setting - although any girl will enjoy this book.

BOOK OVERVIEW:

“You became a real princess the moment you prayed and asked Jesus to live in your heart. And since He is the King of Kings and you are His daughter, that makes you His princess.”

Princess with a Purpose is all about finding true identity in Christ. It all began when Kelly Chapman’s daughter, Kendall, then four years old, asked, “Mommy, when I grow up I want to be a princess. Where do I go to be one? Do I go to Mickey Land?” Those words sparked a passion in Kelly’s heart for little girls and women of all ages. In Princess with a Purpose, readers will discover that, as daughters of the King, they truly are God’s princesses. The Naked Gospel by Andrew Farley

The Naked Gospel: The Truth You May Never Hear in Churchimage The Naked Gospel: The Truth You May Never Hear in Church by Andrew Farley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

Reading this thought-provoking book by Andrew Farley stripped away some of the "religious" thoughts I have attached to the Gospel. He poked and probed around several scripture passages that I personally have never thought through but rather just taken for granted. Much of what he said was intriguing and helpful, but some left me still "chewing" to determine my own beliefs on particular parts. There were multiple chapters and portions I really enjoyed, but one of my favorites was when he dove into the official start of the New Testament and how that impacts our life.

The overall reading of the book is fairly deep, yet his style of writing is easy to read in that it's personal. You are not just reading heavy thoughts, but rather Farley's own testimony to a degree. I personally felt that the theme throughout the book was hard to follow and that each "Part" was like reading a mini book in of it's self. However, I still enjoyed this book despite the weak spots along the way. I would highly recommend this for a seasoned Christian who seems to be in a Christian bubble and would like to challenge the rut of his/her living.

My only caution is that this book needs to be read with great discernment. I am still unsure of how I think about certain thoughts that Farley addressed and I would not read this book with abandon, but with great contemplation and thoughts. Remember that this book is not the Gospel.

BOOK OVERVIEW:

Jesus plus nothing. 100% natural. No additives. It’s the truth you may never hear in church. The Naked Gospel is a chapter-by-chapter assault on the churchy jargon and double talk of our day. It puts forth a message that is simple but life-changing. With a fresh take on Scripture and unapologetic style, The Naked Gospel will challenge you to re-examine everything you thought you already knew.

Grace by Shelley Shephard Gray

Grace: A Christmas Sisters of the Heart Novelimage Grace: A Christmas Sisters of the Heart Novel by Shelley Shepard Gray

MY REVIEW:

GRACE is a simple story that will warm your heart!

I enjoyed the simplicity of the story as well as the characters with stories to be told. Gray's writing is truly enjoyable and the story is uplifting. There were a few parts that were a little hard to believe as, but not so much so that it took away from the story. Despite any weakness in that area it still remained a light, yet touching, read for pure enjoyment.

My favorite part was the multiple story lines going on between various couples.  It was not overly complicated, yet kept me on my toes as I turned the pages.

Due to a bit of the content I would recommend this for older teens (16 & up) and women only.

BOOK OVERVIEW:

It's Christmastime at the Brenneman Bed & Breakfast, and everyone is excited about closing down for the holiday.
Anna and Henry will be celebrating their first Christmas as a married couple, and for Katie and Jonathan Lundy, it's their first Christmas with baby Stefan. Winnie and Samuel Miller plan to stop by as well for a wonderful two weeks of family and rest.
But when two unexpected visitors show up, hoping to stay for Christmas, the family must test their commitment to hospitality. Levi is a widower who lost his wife four years ago and can't bear the thought of another Christmas alone. And Melody is a young pregnant woman who won't open up about how she ended up on her own at Christmas at almost nine months pregnant.
Anna, who knows a thing or two about keeping secrets, doesn't trust her, and strives to find out the truth about these two strangers who have disrupted their holiday. But as the Christmas spirit descends on them all, as well as snow that traps them in the inn, a healing and hopefulness takes over, allowing new relationships to be built, and the boundaries of family to be extended.

The Screwtape Letters – Dramatized Audio Version

The Screwtape Letters: First Ever Full-cast Dramatization of the Diabolical Classic (Radio Theatre)image The Screwtape Letters: First Ever Full-cast Dramatization of the Diabolical Classic by Paul McCusker
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

Goose bumps. Chills. Heightened awareness.

These are a few of the things that this incredible dramatized audio book will give you as you sit on the edge of your seat with your ear tuned into the hair-raising suspense created by the master of writing - C.S. Lewis. He paints a vivid picture of what could be...what just might be...the life and purpose of demons. Be prepared to have your view of spiritual warfare forever altered by this heart-pounding fictional - yet not so fictional - tale of a demons plans and strategy for a believer's life.

Focus on the Family has brought this vivid imagery to audio life through amazing vocal talent and brilliant sound effects. In fact it is so realistic that I would be very cautious as to who I allowed to listen to this series. Most likely it is best for 12-years and older, but still with parental direction for a teen. However, let me not discourage you from listening together with your teen since it presents a powerful message that may be just what your teen needs to hear in our culture of apathy.

Comforts from the Cross by Elyse Fitzpatrick

Comforts from the Cross: Celebrating the Gospel One Day at a Timeimage Comforts from the Cross: Celebrating the Gospel One Day at a Time by Elyse M. Fitzpatrick
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

Comforts From The Cross is beyond excellent!

I don't even know where to begin in writing a review because this book is that good. It is theologically deep, yet ever so easy to understand. It is intensely invigorating, yet overwhelmingly sobering. It is just what everyone needs to read.

Elyse takes you back to the foot of the cross to not only take another look, but to soak in the comfort found there. It is a place of utter suffering, yet a place of amazing love so deep that we must continually reflect upon it.

This book is a 31 day devotional that casts light on many scripture passages we take for granted. In short chapters - easy to consume in a only a matter of minutes - you will dig into the the depths of God's Word to walk away with a better understanding of His overwhelming love for us. This book is a celebration of what we have, yet fail to enjoy.

Comforts From The Cross is a book for the old or new Christian, the zealous or weary saint, the young or the old of age. No matter where you are on your journey through life with Christ you should take 5 minutes for the next 31 days to read this book. You won't regret it.

BOOK OVERVIEW:

Daily comforts from the gospel of Christ provide busy Christian women with brief but deep reminders of how his truths powerfully connect to their daily lives.

Nothing comforts a woman’s soul more than a fully understood and embraced gospel. But many women aren’t finding solace in their relationship with Christ because they don’t see how his life, death, and resurrection connect with soccer practices and swim lessons. Besides, they just don’t have time to sit down and read a theology book, no matter how much they might hunger for God’s truths.

That’s where Elyse Fitzpatrick’s latest book comes in. Comforts from the Cross provides those well-intentioned women with bite-sized readings to remind them of their place in Christ and of his love and ministry in their busy lives. It also dusts off the facts of the gospel to show how ancient truths such as justification, sanctification, and redemption can free and enliven their souls every day. Even more, these five-minute celebrations of the gospel relieve readers of legalistic condemnation and empower them for joyful obedience by engendering fresh love for the Savior.

A perfect choice for gift-giving or personal encouragement, Fitzpatrick’s book helps active women grasp the practicality of the gospel message and experience its deep comforts.

A Woman Who Reflects The Heart Of Jesus by Elizabeth George

A Woman Who Reflects the Heart of Jesus: 30 Days to Christlike Characterimage My rating: 5 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

One of my favorite things about Elizabeth George is that she can take a complicated or deep subject and make it so practical and easy to apply to your own life. This book is no different.

A Woman Who Reflects The Heart Of Jesus explores 30 characteristics modeled for us by Jesus Christ and digs into how we too can "flesh them out" in our own lives. Each character trait is discussed in 1 short chapter that feels very much like a short devotional. You can get the discussion guide to give you homework or you can simple read a chapter a day and be refreshed by the reading alone. Elizabeth creatively goes back and forth between Jesus' example and applying it to our daily lives.

I personally enjoyed this amazing book and the way that each day I could focus on adding a new thought/trait to my life. After 30 days I saw growth in my life in several areas and would enjoy reading this book over and over again as I work more and more on all 30 character traits. I think this is one of Elizabeth's "easiest" books to enjoy because it is a little more "bite sized" than some of her other books. And as always you will be encouraged by her testimony and humble heart.

This is a must-read for any woman at any stage of life.

BOOK OVERVIEW:

Elizabeth George has long been a favorite source of encouragement and wisdom for women who hunger to know how God desires for them to live. In her newest release, Elizabeth asks, “Where better can we learn about right character and conduct than Jesus Himself?”

There is much we can learn from this perfect life example: His generosity in caring for the needs of others, the abundance of His kindness and forgiveness even to His enemies, His persistence in watching over His own, and His willingness to give His all even though He had nothing.

Every woman who desires to…

* skillfully make the most of limited time
* give freely without expecting anything in return
* achieve all things in God’s strength and not her own
* let her light shine and glorify God

…will find a treasure trove of truths and applications that enable her to follow well in the footsteps of Jesus.

Alone In Marriage

Alone in Marriage: Walking with God When It's All Up to Youimage Alone in Marriage: Walking with God When It's All Up to You by Susie Larson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

I didn't even have to finish the first chapter of this book to know that it was a good book.

Really good.

Like the overview below says, there are many books available for those who have crumbling marriages, yet few for those who are committed to sticking it out no matter what. Susie Larson comes along the woman who is lonely, frustrated, angry, bitter, hurting, or fearful and wraps her arms around her while sharing where, how, and why the Bible has answers.

While I have had and do have a great marriage to my husband, Justin, there still have been moments when I have felt slightly alone. This books is encouraging for any woman no matter the degree, length, or circumstances surrounding her feelings of being along in her marriage. Every marriage will go through seasons of this and Susie has written this book to be there for you in those times.

She deals with the real emotions you feel - anger, self-pity, fear, and worry. And she also shows us how God can use our disappointments, loneliness, and more to help us grow in our walk with Him.

This book is easy-to-read and has such a comforting feel and flair to it. Each chapter is ended by practical application for the hard situation you may find yourself in as well as a little homework to get you into God's Word concerning your problem. And don't let that scare you from reading it!

Maybe you are just so busy you feel like you and your husband are sort of just drifting along and that causes you to be lonely in your marriage. Or maybe you are at complete odds and feel all alone in a marriage made for two. Whatever your situation and circumstances...please, please, please go buy this book and read it. If you can relate to the title of this book in the tiniest way...it's meant for you.

BOOK OVERVIEW:

Books abound for those whose marriages are crumbling or have ended. But what about those marriages committed “’til death do us part” and yet are going through a period of time when one spouse is carrying the burden? What happens to a woman when marriage gets heavy and she gets weary? Often, when a woman ends up carrying the weight of the marriage (due to her husband’s health, choices, workload, etc.), her tendency is to “get out or check out.”

She may consider her husband’s distraction an opportunity to do her own thing. But is there a better way to walk through this season? Even thrive? Susie Larson stands in as an encouraging friend, walking with you, helping you to discern how anxiety and anger will slow you down; and how loneliness and disappointment can actually refine and bless you. You will be challenged and inspired as you wrap your arms around this time and remember that God has His arms around you.

Costly Grace by Jon Walker

Costly Grace: A Contemporary View of Bonhoeffer's the Cost of Discipleshipimage Costly Grace: A Contemporary View of Bonhoeffer's the Cost of Discipleship by Jon Walker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

Contemporary. Refreshing. Challenging. Thought-provoking.

Just a few of the words I use to describe this book which is a contemporary view of Bonhoeffer's book titled The Cost Of Discipleship. Not only is it an updated version of the previous book, but it's easy to read all the while being challenging to your thinking and traditional beliefs. I really enjoyed the casual feel - almost as if in a conversation. And the bullet-pointed questions and thoughts to contemplate at the end of each chapter were incredibly helpful and convicting. Not only does this book give you good thoughts and theology, but great application as well.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone - young or old. It will be worth your time to read and appreciate the cost of grace in our lives.

BOOK OVERVIEW:

In 1937, on the threshold of Nazi Germany’s war on the world, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote what turned out to be one of the most influential books of the century, The Cost of Discipleship. In it, he challenged the flabby faith and compromises of German Christians, famously writing, “When Christ calls a man he bids him come and die.”

Now, seventy-three years after the book was first published, Jon Walker has written Costly Grace: A Contemporary View of Bonhoeffer’s The Cost of Discipleship. Although Bonhoeffer’s book still has a loyal readership, it has not been adequately viewed through the eyes of the twenty-first century. Walker brings to a new generation the timeless message of Bonhoeffer against the background of today’s political upheaval and societal change and what it means to those who claim to follow Christ’s teachings, challenging contemporary teachings and lifestyles.

Grace is a foundational doctrine for Christians, yet it is one of the most misunderstood. Bonhoeffer watched as many used the doctrine of grace as an excuse to do whatever they wanted, and in response, he wrote his classic work on what it truly means to follow Jesus. We cheapen grace, he declared, when we use it to compromise our behavior or to lower the standards of God’s Word. In a modern retelling of this Christian classic, Walker explains what Bonhoeffer meant when he taught that grace is free but will cost us everything.

“Bonhoeffer called for a return to ‘costly grace,’ to a recognition that God’s grace comes at the cost of Christ’s passion. Grace is free, but it demands a disciple’s whole life, not just partial obedience to the commands of Christ. Bonhoeffer’s message resonates with our time of instability and insecurity,” Walker explains. “We’re tempted to compromise in order to keep things as they have been, but the cost of discipleship requires that our loyalty be only to Christ and Christ alone. Where our behavior is at odds with our belief, God requires we be ruthless in letting go of the things that entangle us and keep us from becoming just like Jesus.”

Costly Grace is a clear call to discipleship, reminding us what it means to be a disciple of Jesus, and makes the doctrine of grace understandable and practical. Following Bonhoeffer’s example, Walker has anchored this book around an expository study of Matthew 5–7, including the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount. As such, Costly Grace is an excellent resource for small group curriculum or congregation-wide study.

Also set to release in October is the Costly Grace 90-Day Devotional. The companion devotional is dedicated to bringing home to the heart of every Christian the vital call that Bonhoeffer made in his book and that Walker now makes in his. What decisions do we need to act on to walk the road Jesus shows us? Who is it we are called to love and forgive? And why is it imperative that the Beatitudes become our way of life? These are just some of the challenges that Walker helps us tackle in his valuable guide.

A Girl After God’s Own Heart by Elizabeth George

Girl after God's Own Heartimage Girl after God's Own Heart by Elizabeth George
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

MY REVIEW:

It's a Tween Adventure in 10 easy and fun chapters!

I love the fact that Elizabeth George has taken such wonderful spiritual truth and put into a format for younger girl's to enjoy just like their mom's have enjoyed in A Woman After God's Own Heart.

This book takes God's Word and applies it to the lives of 8 through 12 year-olds. (Although my 7-year-old enjoyed it, too.) It's part story, part devotional, part workbook, part fun and games! I found this book to be relevant, catchy, fun, and full of Biblical truth. It's great for an older girl to do alone, a younger girl to do with Mom, or for any girl's club or Sunday school class to use together. It is easy-to-use and the layout is appealing and interactive.

This makes a great gift for any young girl in your life whether it be on a special holiday or for a simple act of encouragement.

BOOK OVERVIEW:

Bestselling author Elizabeth George follows her popular teen books (more than 400,000 copies sold), including A Young Woman’s Guide to Making Right Choices, by reaching out to tweens, ages 8 to 12, in A Girl After God’s Own Heart.

Upbeat and positive, Elizabeth provides biblical truths and suggestions so tweens can thrive. She reaches out to girls where they’re at and addresses daily issues that concern them, including—

* building real friendships
* talking with parents
* putting Jesus first
* handling schoolwork and activities
* deciding how to dress

Girls are busy developing new skills and increasing their knowledge as they grow into young women. A Girl After God’s Own Heart shows them how to establish healthy guidelines that honor God, promote their well-being, and help them get the most from this wonderful time in their lives.

Perfect for Sunday school, preteen groups, and individuals.
